Reflective Journal #5 - Polishing 2D Designs/Colours + Feedback

 Reflective Journal #5 (+ Feedback)

This week we iterated on the vehicle design until we had something we were satisfied with and made pretty large changes to the scavenger character design, mainly in terms of proportions, and also working to make the face more visible (as was requested).

I am very happy with this as a final aesthetic - the character's style is much more in line with what this Wacky Racer theme evokes, as opposed to the more realistic style that was being emulated before. The final colour scheme I feel also balances unique, alien ideas (with the purple) with eye catching/pleasant vibrance (with the orange) and finally some grounded earthy tones (with the grey-green). It's a mixture between the familiar and the unfamiliar essentially, which most extra-terrestrial designs are! The other colour palettes we tried either felt too stereotypically alien (the purple and black heavy, Halo inspired ones) and the khaki / grey / biege combinations felt too modern/set on Earth.

I also polished up and submitted my basic Security Bot robot model to the poll. While not the most expressive or creative design I am happy with the final look overall.

I also had to work on reformatting the entire reference section of the In Design document because the references were meant to be separated onto an isolated page rather than mixed with the images, which makes sense in hindsight. Good to have read the brief again this week and clarified that instead of realising last minute. I think it's looking better now.

Feedback:

(Workshop TA): everything is looking great about design variations, narrative, and colour research, keep it up - only thing to note about the vehicle design is just where does the pilot sit? Just curious - maybe make a hatch or a control panel more evident or show a version with the pilot sitting in it.
Paik: Make sure the face is visible cause that is specified in the brief. This more cartoon approach fits the vehicle well and looks better than before.

As can be seen in the images at the top of the post, implied seating has been added behind the window of the vehicle through all the iterations made for further clarity. The face of the character is now no longer obstructed by the mask, and other little iterations were made such as trying on an orange cape instead of a purple one (which we felt looked better).
